haaa today, we will talk about Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong . We guess all of you knew who he is. We believe that most of you only know his name and his "Genting Resort" but not knowing about his sacrifices in making Genting Highlands as great as today. How do we know? hmm we know lah. In fact we also get to know his history of life after being asked by our beloved lecturer, Prof Hoe Chee Hee to finish our group assignment. Just want to know lah, what is your reaction when your parents say " jom pi genting highlands, lama dah kita tak pi sana" huhuhu i know u guys mesti terkinja-kinja keriangan kan.. dont lie.. we hate lier.. huhuu btw, this is our first try, so please don't blame on us if u feel bored reading our entry. haaaa lets back to the main topic for this post.. --> Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong..
Our late Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong is one of successful enterpreneurs in Malaysia. He was born in 28 February 1918 at Anxi which is located in Southeastern Fujian province, China. Haaa let us treat you his picture.

He is the son of Lim Shi Quan who is his father and also Goh Ban who is his mother. He grew up in the village environment but during his growth China was under 1911 revolution crisis.Fortunately he still got opportunity to get shelter and studying in school. But as we knew, life is so unpredictable. When he was 16, his father passed away. So as men in the family, he and his elder brother had took over their late father’s responsibility. So he stopped studying for the sake of his family.

But, the revolution became worse day by day like there was no end. :'( So he decided to go to new place which is Malaya ( now known as Malaysia). He leave Chine when he was 19 years old in early February. He set off to Malaya to follow his uncle, Lim Mo Jin who worked as Class A Contractor in Kuala Lumpur. He emigrated to Malaya with a bless from his family. In the beginning of his emigration, he just had 175 dollars in his small suitcase which is 100 dollars from his mom and 75 dollars from his own saving.
He sailed across South China Sea for eight
days then he landed and safely arrived in Singapore. Then he went to Kuala
Lumpur to his uncle’s house. As we knew, His uncle, Lim Mo Jin is one of Class
A contractors in Kuala Lumpur, so he took this opportunity to work with his
uncle. He worked for him as a carpenter.
He worked hard and after two years, he tried
to involve in construction field.This shows that he is a good observant. He
learned something in order to gain something new. He started out as a building subs-contractor.
His first project was to build a two-storey school at 9th miles in Cheras Road,
Kuala Lumpur. After that he started to join in Kien Huat Construction Company.
He took over so many projects in Kien Huat Construction Company after had been
qualified as Class A Contractor. He involved in construction projects such as
Construction of Ayer Hitam Dam Project in Penang, Construction of Sultan Yahya
Putra Bridge Project, Kota Bahru and also Construction of Hydroelectric Project
, Cameron Highlands.

Back to the main story of developing
Genting Highlands, his idea was came out when he was in duty as Sub-Contractor
of Cameron Highlands Hydroelectric Project. He had dinner at night and the idea
came when he was enjoying the fresh air and night view in Cameron Highlands.
But as we already knew, Cameron Highlands is far from Kuala Lumpur, therefore
build a mountain resort to a place that is nearer to Kuala Lumpur will give
benefits and greatest business potential compared if it is builds in Cameron
Highlands.

In 1963, he was been advised by The Genting District Officer to approach
Federal Government directly as he already had a plan for developing Genting
Sempah. Tan Sri Haji Mohd Noah bin Omar introduced him to our first Prime
Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al- Haj. But, due to the road of access that
requires 15 years to complete and our country was confronting with Indonesia,
the plan to set up the mountrain had been postponed. After period of time,
Tunku Abdul Rahman decided to approve the project to be handled by private
company since putting huge of funds into development at that time will give
ammunition to opposition. He approved Lim to start the project after the paper work
had been prepared within a week.
Lim Goh Tong started his cooperation
with Tan Sri Haji Mohammad Noah on 27th April 1965 and they incorporated a
private company named as Genting Highlands Sdn Bhd. They applied for Pahang and
Selangor State Government for 4940 hectares and 1110 hectares of freehold land
respectively after the next 5 years. Pahang approved their application but
Selangor was not. Selangor Menteri Besar , Datuk Harun only will give the land
for 99-year lease. After discussed with Datuk Harun and explained clearly, then
his request been granted.
From this we can see that, although he faced a
problem that leads to a failure, he still trying his best and found the best
solution to solve the problem by meeting the person that he needs to seek for
approving. Then after a trial, he succeeded to get the application from
Selangor State Government. This show how he manage to has very good networking
with other people especially with influential people. This will help and give
advantages to entrepreneurs to build up and maintaining their business. So our advise is, "jangan malas"
But,everything in this world will
has its own problem. Problem that Lim Goh Tong faced before opening the Genting
Highlands is in January 1971, Kuala Lumpur and its surrounding areas were hit
by the worst rainstorm when it was all geared up to commence business on that
year. 180 locations of landslides cause the road to Genting had to be closed.
Then after renovation and clearing the landslides, Genting Highlands was
officially opened on 8th May 1971.
